## Key takeaways

- The Quantisnow movers scanner at /movers lists the top 20 US stock gainers and the top 20 losers by percent change today.
- Each mover is shown with up to 3 of its latest Quantisnow news items from the past 48 hours, such as press releases, SEC filings and analyst actions.
- Prices and moves come from Alpaca market data, and the page refreshes every minute while the market is open.
- Signed-out visitors and free accounts see the news column on a 3-minute delay; Plus subscribers see it in real time.
- Momentum alerts flag new highs and lows, rapid moves and volume spikes from 4:00 to 20:00 ET. Free accounts see them 15 minutes after they fire, and every filter is free.

The movers scanner at [/movers](https://www.quantisnow.com/movers) answers "what is moving and why" on one screen. It lists today's biggest US stock gainers and losers by percent change and puts each stock's latest news right beside the move.

## What the scanner shows

The page has two tabs, **Gainers** and **Losers**, each with up to 20 stocks ranked by percent change. Every row shows:

| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Rank | Position by percent change |
| Ticker | Links to the company page |
| Percent change | Today's move, green for gainers and red for losers |
| Company name | From the Quantisnow company directory |
| Price and change | Last price and dollar change (four decimals for stocks under $1) |
| Volume | Shares traded today, abbreviated (K, M, B) |
| News | Up to 3 of the latest Quantisnow items for that ticker from the past 48 hours, newest first, with the event category |

If a stock has no news in the last 48 hours, the row says **No recent news**. A move with no headline can still be news driven (a sector move, a rumor, or a story that is not on the wire), so treat the news column as a lead, not proof of cause.

## Momentum alerts

Above the top movers, the page lists alerts as they fire, with the stock's latest news item and its AI impact and sentiment scores beside each one.

| Alert | Rule |
|---|---|
| New high or low | 4% or more from the reference close. It fires again only on a further move: one point, or a tenth of the move so far if that is larger. |
| Rapid move | 5% or more in about five minutes, above a minimum dollar volume and trade count. Each direction has a 15-minute cooldown. |
| Volume spike | At least 5 times the stock's usual volume for that time of day, measured over the last six minutes against the median of its last 10 sessions. |

The reference close is the previous close in premarket and regular hours, and today's close after hours. After-hours alerts start about 16 minutes after the bell, once that close is available. Stocks under $0.50, stocks trading under about $1M a day, and stocks with a split going ex that day are not scanned.

**Data.** An alert marked **IEX** comes from real-time prints on one exchange, which carries about 2-3% of US volume and trades from 8:00 to 17:00 ET. An alert marked **Full tape** comes from all exchanges and reaches us about 15 minutes after the move. Every volume spike and every alert outside IEX hours is full tape, so those are never real-time, on any plan.

**Relative volume.** Each alert shows two measures: **5m**, the last complete five minutes against the usual volume for that time of day, and **Day**, volume so far today against the usual amount by that time. "Usual" is the median of the past 10 sessions, on the full tape, so these figures are about 16 minutes behind on IEX alerts. An alert also shows how many alerts its stock has fired today; click that count to see only that stock.

**Day leaders.** The stocks furthest from the previous close today, based on their premarket and regular-session alerts, with their latest alert and news. A stock that hasn't fired an alert isn't listed.

**Favorites.** Star a stock to keep it in the Favorites filter. Favorites are saved in your browser and are separate from the tickers you follow, so starring doesn't turn on email alerts or use up your follow limit.

**Export.** Plus subscribers can download the alerts currently showing as a CSV file.

**Filters.** Strategy, price, public float, market cap, average volume and 5-minute relative volume, all free. Public float is the dollar figure from the company's latest 10-K cover page, so it can be more than a year old. A stock missing a value is hidden while that filter is on.

**Delay.** Free and signed-out viewers see each alert 15 minutes after it fires. Plus subscribers see it as soon as it fires.

An alert says the price or volume met a rule. The news beside it is the latest item for that stock, which may have come out before or after the move, and is not a claim about what caused it.

## Data sources and refresh

- **Prices and movers**: the gainers and losers list, prices and volume come from Alpaca market data.
- **News**: headlines come from the Quantisnow wire, which covers press releases, SEC filings, FDA news, analyst ratings and insider trades. See [Event categories](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/event-categories).
- **Refresh**: while the market is open, the page refreshes every minute and shows **Market open, refreshes every minute** with the time of the last update. Once the market closes, it shows **Market closed** and stops refreshing.

## Free vs Plus

The movers list itself is the same for everyone. The news column follows the same delay as the [live news feed](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/live-news-feed):

| Viewer | News column |
|---|---|
| Signed out | 3-minute delay, with a link to sign up |
| Free account | 3-minute delay, with a link to upgrade |
| Plus | Real time |

See [Free vs Plus](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/free-vs-plus).

## How to use it

1. Open [/movers](https://www.quantisnow.com/movers) and pick **Gainers** or **Losers**.
2. Scan the news column for a catalyst: an FDA decision, an offering, an analyst move, earnings, or an 8-K.
3. Click the headline to read the item, or click the ticker to open the [company page](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/company-pages) for the full news history, filings and short volume.
4. To get told next time, click **Follow** on the company page and set alerts. See [Following tickers](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/following-tickers).

Big percent moves are most common in small and low-priced stocks, where a single headline or a thin order book can move the price sharply. A stock that moves too fast can also be paused: check [Trading halts](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/trading-halts) for limit up / limit down pauses. For the morning version of this view, see the daily premarket movers report in [Reports and articles](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/reports-and-articles). To see how stocks have historically reacted to a type of headline, use the [keyword price-impact finder](https://www.quantisnow.com/docs/keyword-impact).

## FAQ

### How many stocks does the movers page show?

Up to 20 gainers and 20 losers, ranked by today's percent change among US stocks.

### How often does the movers page update?

Every minute while the US market is open. When the market is closed, the page shows the last scan and stops refreshing.

### Where does the movers data come from?

Prices, percent change and volume come from Alpaca market data. The news next to each stock comes from the Quantisnow wire.

### Is the news on the movers page real time?

For Plus subscribers, yes. Signed-out visitors and free accounts see news items on a 3-minute delay, the same as the live feed.

### Does the headline explain why the stock moved?

Not always. The scanner shows the latest news for each mover from the past 48 hours, which is a lead worth checking, not proof that the headline caused the move.
