$125M DOE Quantum Science Center renewal accelerates hybrid quantum/classical computing research

Infleqtion, a global leader in neutral atom based quantum technology, is collaborating with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) through the Department of Energy's Quantum Science Center (QSC) to explore how quantum computers can integrate with the world's most powerful high-performance computing (HPC) systems. The joint research aims to demonstrate real-world utility from hybrid computing systems and establish scalable pathways for future fault-tolerant, quantum accelerated supercomputers. This announcement follows Infleqtion's plans to go public through a merger with Churchill Capital Corp X (NASDAQ:CCCX).

"Working with Oak Ridge gives us the opportunity to push quantum and classical systems closer together than ever before," said Pranav Gokhale, CTO, Infleqtion. "By connecting our Sqale quantum computers through NVIDIA NVQLink, a new interface designed to link quantum and GPU systems, we're taking concrete steps toward hybrid computing architectures that can accelerate real scientific discovery."

The partnership is supported by the Department of Energy's recent $125 million, five-year renewal of the QSC, extending through 2030. The renewed funding will accelerate research into quantum/HPC convergence, combining quantum processing units with leadership-class exascale supercomputers to create a new era of scientific computing. Through the QSC, Infleqtion will focus on running materials simulation problems, a key area where quantum computing is expected to deliver early practical advantage.

"The QSC is tackling the major scientific challenge of realizing quantum computation as a paradigm that takes us beyond the capabilities of today's leadership-class HPC systems," said Travis Humble, Director of the Quantum Science Center.

The work builds on Infleqtion's collaboration with NVIDIA to bring NVQLink support to the company's Sqale quantum computer, enabling tighter integration between quantum processors and GPU-based supercomputers. Together, these efforts lay the foundation for a new generation of quantum-accelerated high-performance computing systems capable of tackling previously unsolvable scientific and industrial problems.

The announcement coincides with the SuperComputing 2025 conference, highlighting the growing momentum behind hybrid computing initiatives that bridge quantum research and traditional HPC environments.

The QSC is headquartered at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which is managed by UT-Battelle for the DOE Office of Science. By uniting national laboratories, academic institutions and industry partners, the QSC endeavors to advance American innovation and global leadership by enhancing the computational robustness, algorithmic scalability and simulation accuracy of quantum computing systems.
