SpendHound survey finds AI budgets overrunning and three in four teams reconsidering their software vendors

SpendHound, a subsidiary of YipitData and the #1 rated SaaS spend management platform on G2 that gives finance teams total visibility into AI and software spend, today released the AI Spend Report: 2026 Edition, a survey of 172 CFOs, finance directors, and heads of procurement paired with SpendHound's proprietary spend data from 1,300+ mid-market and enterprise companies. Its central finding: 57% of the people responsible for buying AI are not confident they are paying a fair price for it, or do not know. One in five believe they are overpaying.

Teams Are Buying AI Without a Price Reference

Most buyers have little context for what a fair price actually looks like when it comes to growing AI spend. Pricing models are still evolving, usage can be difficult to predict, and comparable contract data is hard to come by. The result is a growing category of spend that finance teams are being asked to budget for, evaluate, and negotiate with limited points of reference.

"Two years ago, most companies didn't have AI spend on their income statements. Today, it's one of their fastest growing expenses," said Tom Ruello, VP of GTM at SpendHound. "Finance leaders are being asked to forecast that spend, but most teams don't even have visibility into their current spend, let alone their future spend. Add in constantly evolving pricing models and fast-changing usage, and teams have no real reference point for what fair pricing looks like."

This challenge showed up clearly in the survey data:

57% are not confident they are paying a fair price for their AI tools, or do not know. Nineteen percent believe they are overpaying, often for tools whose ROI is still unproven: Only 51% say their AI investments are delivering measurable ROI.
46% came in over their AI budget in 2025. For traditional finance and accounting software the figure was 37%. This budget difference shows that consumption-based pricing is harder to model and adoption is outrunning the budget cycle.
81% expect general-purpose AI spend to increase in 2026, and 22% have no single owner for the AI budget. Roughly one in five organizations is spending more on AI each year without a named accountable buyer.

"Everyone said AI would simplify the tech stack. Fewer tools, leaner bills, cleaner workflows. That is not exactly what is happening yet," said CJ Gustafson, tech CFO and founder of Mostly Metrics. "Teams are adding AI tools faster than they are removing existing software, and governance is running about six months behind experimentation. AI Is Reshaping the Software Stack

While AI is making budgets harder to forecast and manage, it’s also changing how companies are building and optimizing their stacks. For years the triggers for replacing a finance vendor were price, missing features, poor support, and contract timing. Now AI capabilities have become just as important.

76% are actively reconsidering their existing vendor relationships because of AI. Twenty-eight percent are very likely to replace or consolidate finance and accounting tools in the next 12 months specifically due to AI capabilities, and another 48% say they’re somewhat likely to make a change.
Better AI-native alternatives (41%) now rival cost as a switching trigger, essentially tied with consolidating the stack (42%) and tools being too expensive or poor value (41%).
AI isn’t replacing software so much as stacking on top of it. Only 7% say general-purpose AI decreased their traditional finance software spend, while 62% report no change and 17% say it increased. Adding AI-native tools is the biggest reason respondents expect software bills to rise (65%).
