IMAX Delivers $140 Million in Global Box Office to Date with Universal Pictures' Mythic Action Epic — 21.9% of the Film's Global Box Office

The historic journey of Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey in IMAX continues, as the groundbreaking film led IMAX Corporation (NYSE:IMAX) to the highest grossing second weekend in IMAX history with $48 million in global IMAX box office.

Down just 8% from its record-breaking $52 million opening weekend, the film also led the IMAX global network to its third-highest-grossing weekend of all time. To date, Universal Pictures' The Odyssey has generated $140 million in IMAX global box office, accounting for 21.9% of the film's global box office. The film surpassed $100 million in IMAX global box office in just 10 days, becoming the second-fastest film in IMAX history to reach the milestone.

In North America, The Odyssey earned $24 million in IMAX box office from just 443 screens — down just 19% from its opening weekend — representing a remarkable 27.7% market share and the highest domestic second-weekend IMAX box office in Company history. Internationally, the film generated $24 million across 450 IMAX screens – up an impressive 7% from its opening weekend – representing a 19% market share and delivering the biggest IMAX weekend ever across EMEA.

Globally, The Odyssey sustained its extraordinary momentum throughout the week, setting new IMAX weekday box office records on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday while averaging approximately $11 million in IMAX global box office per day.

IMAX 70mm Film, the gold-standard 18K presentation available at just 41 IMAX locations worldwide, earned $5.2 million over the weekend, averaging $126,000 per screen. To date, IMAX 70mm Film has generated $16.9 million in global box office, averaging a massive $412,000 per screen and accounting for 12.1% of the film's total IMAX global box office. With no signs of slowing down, additional showtimes are already sold out into September.

The mythic action epic — for which IMAX developed a next-generation film camera and state-of-the-art technology enabling sync sound — is the first-ever theatrical release shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras. Nolan and his cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema also collaborated with IMAX to develop The Keighley — the next-generation IMAX Film Camera named for the company’s Chief Quality Gurus, the late David Keighley and Patricia Keighley — along with an accompanying sound blimp compatible with multiple IMAX Film Cameras. Together, they shot 2.1 million feet of IMAX film in making The Odyssey, and every IMAX 70mm Film print is approximately 11 miles long and weighs roughly 600 pounds.

The Odyssey continues its global IMAX rollout with upcoming releases in South Korea (August 5), China (August 14), and Japan (September 11). The film will play in IMAX 70mm Film locations for at least five weeks, with many locations adding screenings between midnight and 7:00 a.m. to meet demand.
