On September 1, 2026, Krebs on Security reported that a service operating on the dark web began selling photographs of more than 153 million driver's licenses from the United States and Canada, along with roughly 10 million identification cards and 3 million passports and travel documents. Krebs verified the samples by searching the database for his own records and those of other individuals who had consented to the checks, and tracked the leak to IDScan. Media reports suggest that multiple lawsuits have already been filed against IDScan and law firms have also launched investigations into potential class-action litigation related to the reported security incident at IDScan.

While traditional ID scanners check for security features on the physical card, and in many cases store an image of the card, Trust Stamp’s AAMVA DLDV service allows customers to confirm in real time that the information on the ID matches the DMV database without storing an image of the ID. This secondary layer of verification provides a heightened level of privacy protection while addressing high-end sophisticated forgeries that can bypass standard optical scans.
