Questions about sector performance
- How is sector performance calculated?
- Each sector's return is built from the companies in it. We take each company's market value today, work back to its value at the start of the period from its price change, and compare the sector's two totals. Large companies count for more, and a stock that has already doubled does not get extra weight for it.
- How long is each period?
- A week is five trading sessions, a month is 21, a quarter is 63 and a year is 252. Year to date starts from the last close of the previous year. During the trading day, longer periods add today's move to the last close.
- Why might these numbers differ from a sector ETF?
- Sector funds cap their largest holdings and adjust for shares that are not freely traded, and their prices include fees and dividends. We use each company's full market value and price change, with no cap. The two usually move together, but a sector led by a few giants, such as technology, can differ by a few points over a year.
- Why does a company's sector here differ from its company page?
- These pages use the sector groups of the S&P 500 funds, where Alphabet and Meta count as communication services and Visa as financials. Our company directory uses exchange listing categories, which can place them elsewhere.
- Is a leading sector a good investment?
- Not by itself. These tables show what has already happened. Sectors take turns leading and past returns say little about the next move. Nothing here is investment advice.
Company list and sectors come from the public SEC Form N-PORT filings of the Select Sector SPDR funds, holdings dated 2026-06-30, so they can lag recent index changes.
