Key takeaways

  • The Quantisnow movers scanner at /movers lists the top 20 US stock gainers and the top 20 losers by percent change today.
  • Each mover is shown with up to 3 of its latest Quantisnow news items from the past 48 hours, such as press releases, SEC filings and analyst actions.
  • Prices and moves come from Alpaca market data, and the page refreshes every minute while the market is open.
  • Signed-out visitors and free accounts see the news column on a 3-minute delay; Plus subscribers see it in real time.

The movers scanner at /movers answers "what is moving and why" on one screen. It lists today's biggest US stock gainers and losers by percent change and puts each stock's latest news right beside the move.

What the scanner shows

The page has two tabs, Gainers and Losers, each with up to 20 stocks ranked by percent change. Every row shows:

FieldMeaning
RankPosition by percent change
TickerLinks to the company page
Percent changeToday's move, green for gainers and red for losers
Company nameFrom the Quantisnow company directory
Price and changeLast price and dollar change (four decimals for stocks under $1)
VolumeShares traded today, abbreviated (K, M, B)
NewsUp to 3 of the latest Quantisnow items for that ticker from the past 48 hours, newest first, with the event category

If a stock has no news in the last 48 hours, the row says No recent news. A move with no headline can still be news driven (a sector move, a rumor, or a story that is not on the wire), so treat the news column as a lead, not proof of cause.

Data sources and refresh

  • Prices and movers: the gainers and losers list, prices and volume come from Alpaca market data.
  • News: headlines come from the Quantisnow wire, which covers press releases, SEC filings, FDA news, analyst ratings and insider trades. See Event categories.
  • Refresh: while the market is open, the page refreshes every minute and shows Market open, refreshes every minute with the time of the last update. Once the market closes, it shows Market closed and stops refreshing.

The movers list itself is the same for everyone. The news column follows the same delay as the live news feed:

How to use it

  1. Open /movers and pick Gainers or Losers.
  2. Scan the news column for a catalyst: an FDA decision, an offering, an analyst move, earnings, or an 8-K.
  3. Click the headline to read the item, or click the ticker to open the company page for the full news history, filings and short volume.
  4. To get told next time, click Follow on the company page and set alerts. See Following tickers.

Big percent moves are most common in small and low-priced stocks, where a single headline or a thin order book can move the price sharply. A stock that moves too fast can also be paused: check Trading halts for limit up / limit down pauses. For the morning version of this view, see the daily premarket movers report in Reports and articles. To see how stocks have historically reacted to a type of headline, use the keyword price-impact finder.

FAQ

How many stocks does the movers page show?

Up to 20 gainers and 20 losers, ranked by today's percent change among US stocks.

How often does the movers page update?

Every minute while the US market is open. When the market is closed, the page shows the last scan and stops refreshing.

Where does the movers data come from?

Prices, percent change and volume come from Alpaca market data. The news next to each stock comes from the Quantisnow wire.

Is the news on the movers page real time?

For Plus subscribers, yes. Signed-out visitors and free accounts see news items on a 3-minute delay, the same as the live feed.

Does the headline explain why the stock moved?

Not always. The scanner shows the latest news for each mover from the past 48 hours, which is a lead worth checking, not proof that the headline caused the move.
